Relativistic Effects in Bistatic SAR Processing and System Synchronization

چکیده
This paper addresses relativistic effects in bistatic and multistatic SAR systems and missions. It is shown that the use of different reference frames for bistatic SAR processing and bistatic radar synchronization is prone to notable phase and time errors. These errors are a direct consequence of the relativity of simultaneity and can be explained in good approximation within the framework of Einstein’s special theory of relativity. Using the invariance of the spacetime interval, an analytic expression is derived which shows that the time and phase errors increase with increasing along-track distance between the satellites. The predicted errors are in excellent agreement with measurements from TanDEM-X and provide a satisfactory explanation for previously observed DEM height offsets that exceeded 10 m. Consideration of the unexpected relativistic effects is essential for accurate DEM generation in TanDEM-X and has in the meantime been implemented in the operational processing chain.

Experimental data imaging for the airborne bistatic SAR
The signal processing in the bistatic SAR case is more complex than the monostatic synthetic aperture radar (SAR) case due to issues such as the range history of the target echo signal, time synchronization error, time-varying Doppler rate because of squint, etc. In this paper, a monostatic equivalent geometry model of bistatic SAR is established; the mechanism of the System time synchronizatio...
متن کاملBistatic Experiment Using TerraSAR-X and DLR’s new F-SAR System
A bistatic X-band experiment was successfully performed early November 2007. TerraSAR-X was used as transmitter and DLR’s new airborne radar system F-SAR, which was programmed to acquire data in a quasicontinuous mode to avoid echo window synchronization issues, was used as bistatic receiver. Precise phase and time referencing between both systems, which is essential for obtaining high resoluti...

In November 2007, the first bistatic SAR spaceborne-airborne X-band campaign was carried out , using TerraSAR-X as transmitter and DLR’s new airborne SAR system F-SAR as receiver [1]. The importance of the experiment was not only due to its pioneering character, but also to its potential to serve as a test-bed for the validation of non-stationary bistatic acquisition procedures, novel calibrati...
متن کاملAn integrative synchronization and imaging approach for bistatic spaceborne/stratospheric SAR with a fixed receiver
Bistatic spaceborne/stratospheric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) with a fixed receiver is a novel hybrid bistatic SAR system, in which a spaceborne SAR serves as the transmitter of opportunity, while a fixed receiver is mounted on a stratospheric platform. This paper presents an integrative synchronization and imaging approach for this particular system. Firstly, a novel synchronization method ...
متن کاملBistatic Synthetic Aperture Radar Synchronization Processing
Bistatic synthetic aperture radar (BiSAR), operates with separate transmitter and receiver that are mounted on different platforms (Cherniakov & Nezlin, 2007), will play a great role in future radar applications (Krieger & Moreira, 2006). BiSAR configuration can bring many benefits in comparison with monostatic systems, such as the exploitation of additional information contained in the bistati...
